Google Transitions Home/Nest Devices to Gemini

October 2025 marks the official shift of Google’s Home and Nest ecosystem from Google Assistant to Gemini, its next-generation AI. Announced earlier at Google I/O, the changeover brings Gemini Live to smart speakers, displays, and integrated home hubs. Unlike Assistant, Gemini offers far more natural conversation flow and context retention, making interactions smoother and more human-like. Home automation routines now benefit from richer AI, with Gemini capable of predicting user needs based on patterns and preferences. Google has promised that on-device processing will handle sensitive data, reducing privacy concerns. However, some features are locked behind Gemini Pro subscriptions, sparking debates about monetization. Smart home OEM partners are already updating integrations to support Gemini’s expanded capabilities. Early users report that Gemini handles multi-step commands, such as “dim the lights, play jazz, and set an alarm,” more effectively than Assistant ever did. Education and accessibility features are also getting a boost, as Gemini can explain processes or simplify instructions in real time. While some nostalgia remains for Assistant, most agree the transition is a major leap forward. Google hopes this move will reestablish its dominance in the smart home sector.
